Along The River
The mist is in the fields
The cold is in the ground
The moon is in the trees
The heart is in the sound
The heron is in the reeds
Where the river bends and wanes
And the haunted willow faces
Sing time’s sad refrain
Along the wooden path
To the green lake
The kestrel on the post
Knows the laws we forsake
The tern swoops and hovers
Then dives for gold
As the carp trapped for summer
Glide by the sign that says ‘Sold’
After a day of rain
Suddenly the sky’s ablaze
And the valley is transformed
As the sun threads the haze
And the cattle in the river
The clouds, the grass, the trees
The light from the heavens
Give their testimony
