Something Fell
It's finally happened
Christine's gone
She's rented a house
And moved away
And Richard was left standing
Outside the porch
He wanted to wave
But it didn't seem right
She said she loved him
And that didn't either
Still at the end of the day
There won't be much to show
Just a few cracks in the ice
Where something fell
Now there's an empty house
And a garden to tend
When there's a loose thread
It's difficult to mend
He doesn't expect to sleep at night
And he doesn't
He's just a mortal man
A feather in a fire
Now thirty years’ work
Seem to have gone nowhere at all
He passes his children's photographs
Hanging in the hall
And when they come and visit
They tell him straight
They do not intend
To make his mistakes
